In a non-traditional twist, stability balls have moved from the gym to the classroom! Research supports that using stability balls to sit on instead of traditional chairs increases the levels of attention, decreases the levels of hyperactivity, and increases time on task.
My school is a K-5 school in North Carolina that is dedicated to raising leaders and responsible citizens of our world.
The students work hard setting goals and achieving them. They are excited to learn and look forward to going to school everyday. The students in my class often have many different learning styles and processing challenges and benefit from differentiated instruction and thinking "outside the box". In our school, the children are hardworking, fun, motivated and responsible students and I can't wait to watch them grow as leaders and learners this year!
My Project
All students learn in different ways, therefore, not just students with ADD or sensory processing issues will benefit from stability balls as chairs. The 24 stability balls will provide increased blood flow to the brain and engage their bodies, helping students academically and leading to deeper learning. They will keep students actively moving without walking around or disrupting the class, helping them and others to focus better and for longer amounts of time. It will help improve coordination, better posture and better handwriting and strengthen back and stomach muscles as it uses the students' core muscles to sit on the balls. Students and teachers alike are benefiting from using these kinds of "chairs".
The stability balls are a fun way to improve learning in each student and help all the students to achieve deeper learning and all around improvement in academics and muscle coordination with large and small motor skills.
The students will be proud to work in a room that supports their needs in such a unique way.
