My students come from families that are not poor. They, however, are certainly not rich, either. Their parents work hard for what they have and give their kids what they can. They have what they need, but not all the stuff they would love to have. There are some students in my class who bring home special, church-created backpacks with food for their families for the weekend. Some students bring spiral notebooks and binders that have been used in years past because they don't have the luxury of buying brand new supplies each year. They make what they have work for them without complaining that their backpack is a hand-me-down or that half their pack of pencils went to their older brother. Even though they may come from different backgrounds, they have one thing in common with every other child who goes to school. They deserve to have a loving, exciting, safe and care-free place to learn with a teacher who wants to make it special and fun for them everyday.
