Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a physical education teacher and coach at an inner city, urban school district, it can be difficult to find new activities for students to try. Each semester, combined with my co-teachers, we teach approximately 300 students. Many of the students in our school are used to doing the same types of sports and physical activities every year. They also do not have as many safe areas to visit to try new activities when they go home or throughout the summer months.
I want to expose the students to new engaging activities that they may not have a chance to try outside of school.
By creating new opportunities, such as an after school Ping Pong club, students will become more engaged in fitness activities and games, and might even find a new hobby to enjoy at home, or with friends.
My Project
By obtaining ping pong tables, I will be able to expand the number of different team sports that our students are exposed to. They can learn the rules to a game that will be new to many of the students, while having fun at the same time!
The team sport of Ping Pong can be used to work on many components of a fit and healthy lifestyle, such as teamwork, lifelong physical activity, strategy, and fitness!
Although students might just think they are trying to score points against the other team, they will unknowingly be increasing their fitness level and communication skills with their teammate.
