I work with active, eager English learners in grades K - 4 in small groups. It is a rural Title l school, in which all students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are increasingly providing additional services, like health care and food and clothing to help meet students' basic needs and free up their energy for learning.
My students come from hardworking immigrant families, many of whom struggle to get by.
One of these challenges is a lack of resources - time, books, background knowledge, energy - that parents can use to help their children with their learning.
In spite of their daily struggles, my students bring with them an abundance of enthusiasm and willingness to share their stories. In addition, families continue to show an increasing willingness to be involved with school, especially by attending school events and interest in reading to their children in their native language.
My Project
Because my students are energetic and enthusiastic, we like to move from the tables to the carpet, or vice versa, during a lesson. Movement breaks allow them to maintain their attention. However, sometimes small disputes over who is sitting where can lead to a disruption in learning.
A classroom carpet will improve my students' experience by allowing each student to know exactly where to move to.
Each child will also feel secure knowing that they have their own spot. This allows me to have my students move around the room while minimizing the loss of instructional time.
Although my school does a lot to raise funds from the community to support the students' school needs, there is not funding available for items like a classroom carpet. I appreciate that you have taken the time to read this request. Thank you!
