My Project

In my 10th grade English classroom, students explore how writers use storytelling and humor to navigate personal and cultural challenges. This year, our central essential question is: “How do humor and storytelling help individuals navigate personal and cultural challenges?” To bring this to life in a meaningful, relevant way for my students, I am requesting a full class set of Born a Crime by Trevor Noah.

Born a Crime is an engaging, powerful memoir that speaks directly to the experiences of many young people with themes around identity, belonging, resilience, and finding your voice even when the world feels stacked against you.

Trevor Noah’s stories blend humor with hard truths, giving students a model of how laughter can become a tool for survival, connection, and empowerment.

Right now, we don’t have enough copies for every student to read the book at the same time. Having a full class set means all students will be able to annotate, discuss, and dig deeply into this text together. It allows them to engage in higher-level thinking, collaborate in literature circles, and connect the themes of the memoir to their own personal experiences and writing.

By supporting this project, you are giving my students access to a text that not only builds literacy skills but also nurtures empathy, critical thinking, and confidence. You are helping them see how individual stories (especially those told with honesty and humor) can build bridges across cultures and communities.

Thank you for helping my students discover the power of storytelling and the courage that can grow from it. Your generosity will make a lasting impact on their learning and their lives.
