Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In Springfield, 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch and getting supplies is difficult. I miss being able to provide them with the routines and stability of our classroom, especially given the current uncertainty.
My students are staying home with their families, very often providing child care while parents are essential workers.
They are sharing public Internet and electronics. Buses are not running and finding transportation to get to school and back for resources is very difficult. Family members who are sick or immunocompromised are unable to pick up food and supplies.
Teenagers LOVE playing with toys that hold their interest and learning while doing so is even better! Being able to give them tools and supplies to complete projects they are interested in is another way to encourage my students "hey, I value what you'd like to learn about and here are the tools to support you." And nothing feels better than that!
My Project
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are distance-learning for the rest of our school year and trying to create our daily supportive environment from afar. Enter the Boredom Bag! The response from students was overwhelmingly positive and we would like to replenish their activities based on their interests.
We are helping students combat the monotony of being home by giving them educational toys and activities to "learn by doing" and plan to use these manipulatives in future Geometry lessons while distance learning.
These are also activities that all children in a household can complete as a family group activity.
I have chosen materials to create three separate projects for home-bound students. They will design and color a geometric mandala on canvas, plant a simple garden and create a specialized journal to memorialize this time. I've also included some healthy snacks and stress balls to help ease their anxiety.
