My Students

Calvin Coolidge once said, "The most common commodity in this country is unrealized potential." Unfortunately, many of my students are brimming with unrealized potential. They are not challenged with texts that are hard to read. I want to challenge and inspire them to love reading.

The students I teach are part of the gifted program.

In a school that has many low socioeconomic students, the funds that are available are used for the struggling students. Getting books written at higher levels is not a priority. It is hard to find a book that is interesting, written at a high reading level, and not inappropriate for middle school students. The students that I teach can not all afford to buy a book themselves, so we are stuck reading books that have little challenge for them.

My Project

I can't sum it up any better than these book reviews on this novel from amazon. "I first read this book many years ago, as an assignment for English class in middle school. I remember at the time being shocked by the content of the book, and surprised that I was being assigned to read a book that was somewhat modern, startlingly graphic, and engrossing at the same time. It fascinated me and opened my eyes to a style of writing of which at that point I had not yet been exposed. Graphic subject matter aside, it remained one of my favorite reading assignments of the time. Please, help us get a class set of Deathwatch chapter books. While the subject matter is mature, it is not over the top. Unlike what some reviewers here have said, there certainly are people in this world who are as cruel as Madec; just read the news headlines. The overriding theme of justice prevailing, and moral decisions triumphing over lies and deceit, makes it an enjoyable weekend read that leaves you satisfied with the conclusion."

Requiring my student to read is a no brainer.

I want them to love reading the way I love reading. It is my solid belief that this novel may turn non readers into readers. I want to give them the gift of reading, and the feeling of accomplishment when completing a novel which may be a bit harder than what they have been exposed to in the past.
