Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how intimidating it was to present a book report to the entire class? My students need a great book series that they can read and share with classmates. They will be able to learn from each other as they watch and present reports from the same book series.
My students are eager to learn and curious about the world around them.
They come to school every day ready to learn and enthusiastic about everything we do. Our school is in a low socioeconomic area of the city. Our families often struggle to provide the basics for their children.
Our school tries very hard to fill in the gaps for all students by often providing uniforms, shoes, coats, backpacks, supplies, and even food bags for the weekends. The majority of our students are English language learners. Many of our parents do not even speak English and Spanish is the only language spoken in the home. This makes it difficult for our students to learn to read, write, and speak English with no support from home. These children can achieve academically at the high level demanded by the Common Core with just a little extra support and instruction.
My Project
It is often difficult to find a series of books that peak the interest of both boys and girls. The American Chillers is a great series that all children enjoy. Third grade is the first time these students will be required to make oral presentations in front of the class. These books will be used for students to read and write book reports to share with each other.
I will use the comprehension, writing, and inferencing materials in small groups to help students analyze the characters and plots of these stories. We will work together to write comprehensive reports that will be presented orally to the class. Students will be able to learn as they go by watching others present reports and critiquing one another. As each novel is presented it will encourage students to continue reading the series. These materials allow my students to learn to look critically at every part of a story and form their own opinion of the story and author as they compare and contrast the books.
These supplies will help my students achieve academically at a level they have not been expected to in the past.
They will be able to learn to examine all parts of stories to improve their comprehension. They will learn to understand inferences, analyze characters, and write a solid review of a novel. They will also be able to find comfort in presenting the same type of report as others because they will each be reading a different book from the series. These materials will help us meet standards.
