Boost My Readers!

Help me give my students two chrome books and a printer so that they could complete their rich, vivid reading projects in color!!!

My Students

My students are right at the heartbeat of East New York in Brooklyn. They are between ages 13-16, mostly black, hispanic with a smattering of Bengali. They all live in the housing projects that are serviced by our school and they lead interesting lives!

On any given 90 minute ELA block, my wonderful students strive to read, discuss and of course use Google translate to make sense of texts that may not be of any interest to them just because I ask them to!

They are that dedicated to learning even when it is so challenging because of their varying lexile reading levels.

My students are challenging, but that's part of what has kept me in the same school since September 1999! When they get it, when we celebrate a success, when we cry because of a setback, then that dogged, resilient Brooklyn mentality shines through and I get a jolt that is empowering.

My Project

In my grade eight ELA class, we have physical books in our classroom library. However, most of my bilingual students are challenged by text that does not necessarily cater to their first language in any way!

The two chrome books would go a really long way to help students log onto sites like MYON for Spanish, Arabic, Bengali and Haitian-Creole subtitled texts.

Just imagine how much more interesting and effective reading and book reports would be if a student could have access to a great online library! Printing out reading projects in color from our color printer would be awesome!
