Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fantastic students at a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We love to learn through hands-on activities and authentic experiences in the classroom, especially during small group instruction. Almost 10% of our students are English language learners and 33% are students with disabilities. Almost half of our students stay in after-school until after 5 PM each day while their parents work.
Our school is truly a barrier free school, serving all students who come through our doors.
Helping students achieve their dreams is our goal. Our students are in need of essential resources and materials that will benefit them during instruction.
My Project
The two bulletin boards in our classroom are an essential part of each day. They are referred to during lessons to discuss the lesson's essential vocabulary, as well as necessary charts, questions and definitions that relate to the unit. Our classroom wall space is limited so we need more bulletin boards to hang student work. Hanging work from the walls is currently very difficult. It often results in hammering staples into the hard concrete walls. It is not effective and sometimes, despite our best efforts, ends in ripped student work.
Bulletin boards will enable our students to showcase their efforts and allow others to see what we have been working on.
Students feel proud to see published writing pieces and culminating unit activities hung up in the classroom. We want to show students that we value their dedication and commitment to learning.
