I have been teaching music in Idaho since August of 2021. During that time, I have sought to improve the quality of music education at the schools I serve. I believe I have been slowly building a program that will benefit learners as potential musicians, artists, and thinkers. Now, my students need greater access to instruments and materials that will more deeply benefit their overall education.
According to a 2006 literature review by the National Endowment for the Arts, students with high participation in the arts, including music, performed better on standardized tests than students with lower involvement.
In fact, according to a 2005 Harris poll quoted in that literature review, ninety-three percent of parents say that the arts are important to a well-rounded education, eighty-three percent of parents say that the arts help students communicate more effectively with adults and their peers, and seventy-nine percent agree that “incorporating the arts into education is the first step in adding back what’s missing in public education today”. Furthermore, arts education can be a vital tool in developing creative thinking, simultaneous coordination between multiple mental and physical skill sets, language development, and increased brain power and functionality. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Giving my schools the opportunity to have classroom sets of Boomwhackers and ukuleles will further support student learning both in and out of the music room because of the reasons above. The music whiteboards and dry erase markers will give greater access to beneficial learning tools for students at one of my schools, as well. Ultimately, I want my students to leave elementary school with a greater sense of musicality, a more focused ability to learn, and a love for the arts in general. Thank you!
