Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The fourth and fifth grade students at our school's Bookworms Book Club have been actively meeting during their lunch hour on Wednesdays and Fridays, for the last two school years. They are predominantly English Language Learners, who have been in the Dual Immersion Program since kindergarten. Since nearly half of the students are in the Dual Immersion Program, most of the Bookworms read fluently in English and in Spanish.

The Bookworms read an average of twelve books per year in addition to their regular Core Reading assignments.

The 'Bookworms" have had fundraisers to boost Book Club membership and purchase fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as fund field trips for book club field trips. For example, the "Bookworms" sold "oobleck" during the celebration of Dr. Seuss Birthday on March 3 & 4th, 2020 and netted $200.00. In addition to activities such as selling "oobleck", the Bookworms participate in Read Across America activities.

For Example, during Read Across America week, Bookworms visit primary classrooms and read to small groups of students. They also dress up in their favorite book character, such as the BFG, from Roald Dahl's book, the BFG,

My Project

Students who have participated in the Bookworms Book club are motivated readers who enjoy discovering books with their friends. Most of the students participating show improved reading scores on their NWEA/MAP test, which is administered each trimester. With Book Club funds raised from selling oobleck, slime, and pencils (holiday theme), and donations from teachers and parents, the Bookworms get to wear special T-shirts with the Bookworm logo. The Bookworms enjoy special field trips also funded by students and parents selling the aforementioned items during recess times.

We are now adding non-fiction texts, in the form of Science Spin and Super Science magazines, to broaden our students' selections for Book Club participation.

By providing a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, students in the Book Club have the opportunity to self-select topics they are truly interested in reading about. Also our students have the opportunity of alternating between fiction and non-fiction titles. In many cases, students will read a fiction text and then select a non-fiction text that supports the theme in the fictional text. For example after reading the book, Island of the Blue Dolphin by Scott O'Dell, some students chose science magazine article or nonfiction book about "otters".
