A compelling story for 4th graders about a boy who escapes the cotton fields and goes to San Franciso in 1906, only to experience the great earthquake that sent raging fires through the city. This text delves into the theme of Risks and Consequences that 4th graders explore as they read about Nickolas' choices to either escape again or help others to survive. This text is an excellent followup to selections such as Two Tickets to Freedom , since it presents the theme of taking risks and accepting the consequences. The text is also an excellent description of San Francisco's history as the Gold Rush Capital city of California. Students can use maps to locate the information in the novel. It is a great supplemental text to use with our California History text.
