I teach ESL students from K-5 and grades 9-12. My job is to make them feel safe and comfortable when they come to school for the first time in the United States. Some of my students come from very low-income households and experienced an interrupted formal education in their native countries. This means that the needs of the students are very diverse!
What I love about my students it that they teach me new things every day!
I love learning about their cultures, food, languages, and families. My experience with them is invaluable, and I am struck by their perseverance in the face of challenges. Last year, one of my students worked two jobs, took 8 academic classes (no lunch break!), and attended after-school tutoring just to achieve his dream: graduating from high school. He was the first in his family to ever graduate! I want to help students like this by providing them with materials that will help them succeed.
My Project
I have a significant library of novels, textbooks, and other materials for ELLs. Our classroom requires a place to house these materials so that they can be enjoyed by students. I would like to purchase a bookshelf to hold our materials.
Students will be able to take books out of the ESL library and use them for pleasure reading.
This gives them the opportunity to practice English by reading about a subject that interests them. Students are given a "choice" book each marking period that they read. They then share what they learned with the class, creating further opportunities for learning.
