Books With Kids That Look Like Me

Help me give my students opportunities to read books that have characters and life experiences like their own. The Yasmin and Sadiq books relate to my students' culture and ethnicity.

My Students

I teach Special Education to grades K through 5 including math, reading and writing. The remote learning has been challenging for my students as my students learn best from hands-on materials. I send materials via the mail, have families pick them up at school if possible and even deliver them.

Having an actual book in their hands will be a refreshing break from the online approach.

The author I am selecting creates characters, settings and situations that are so relevant and relatable to my students and their backgrounds that they will become very engaged readers.

My Project

My special education students are hands-on learners! Remote learning can be so challenging with everything on the screen. Can you imagine my students actually holding a book in their hands that is at their reading level and has relatable characters?

With books like these, my students will be so engaged reading about cultural practices and daily lives like their own.

They will enjoy seeing kids who look like them and have names like theirs. Engagement will be huge, thanks to you!
