Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from our K-2 population who are in need of additional literacy support beyond what they receive in their regular classrooms. They are often challenged by reading and writing tasks and try to adapt by looking “busy” as students or piggybacking on the work of their peers. Large group reading, writing, and sharing is often intimidating for these students as their skills deficiets becomes more apparent to their peers. My students want to succeed and have literacy tasks feel manageable for them. They love to show what they know in our small-group sessions, and enjoy fun stories that they connect their everyday lives to; just like anyone else. With the extra support they receive in our daily lessons, my students may be moving forward little by little, but they are moving!

My Project

The books in these collections are about topics my students will love reading about! Readers of all ages are often drawn to texts containing subjects that they have some experience with or are curious about. For my kids, these high-interest selections not only have an age-appropriate focus, but are colorful and extremely engaging. And when we can still get actual books in the hands of kids, they are participating in an experience that is essential to their learning and development. I can’t wait to see their excitement soar as they begin to explore these new books and get ready to read!
