Over 80% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of these children don't have access to the selection of reading, math and hands-on materials that children from more affluent families take for granted. Our children have a great hunger for knowledge but often lack the materials to fulfill this appetite. Our school is a neighborhood school in a small New England city. There is a strong sense of community here between parents, staff, and residents that truly makes a difference in the school experience.
My Project
Moving into a new community and starting at a new school is an experience filled with many emotions for children. Excitement, nervousness and wonder are just some of the ways that new students in elementary school feel on their first day.
At our school, it is our goal to make new students feel welcomed into the school community by presenting them with a new book at a school-wide assembly each month.
Students are called up to be recognized and given a new book to take home to read with their family.
The book titles in this project were selected to give to any new student in grade levels K-5. We hope that this presentation of a new book makes our new students feel like a welcomed member of our school family!
