"Oh, if only I had a book to illustrate this concept!" This grant is the second of three grants I have written to collect books that have been recommended by our science curriculum as relevant to our unit on plants and animals.
I teach twenty-two students in an inner city school where there is a high level of linguistic, academic, and cultural diversity as well as an overall eagerness to learn.
Most of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. They see school as a safe place where they can rely on predictable routines and a lot of exciting learning. Their hard work motivates me to seek out the very best for them.
My Project
In first grade, the students love science. It's very gratifying to hear them cheer when I announce that we will be having science that day. I frequently hear kids talk about how much they love science, and at the end of each day when we remember the things we have done, students will often recall the science lesson if there was one. I am thrilled to be able to do science once or twice a week, because these days with so much emphasis on other subjects, it's easy to cast it to the side.
I find it difficult, however, to teach some of the concepts in this unit without sufficient resources. For example, we talk about plant and animal needs, habitats, defense mechanisms, and adaptations. I think these concepts could be better understood if I had some books to show or stories to read that illustrate the ideas. The more ways I can present a concept, the greater the number of students who will grasp it, and the greater depth to which students will understand it.
Not only will these books help the students understand some difficult scientific concepts, they will also improve students' reading.
The books will live in my classroom library, and will be prominently displayed during our unit on plants and animals. I requested as many books in hardcover versions as possible, so that the books last for years to come. The books will also be shared with my two other grade level team teachers, so your generosity will reach many students for many years to come!
