Books To Study New York City

My students need 38 books to learn about the history of New York City.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Dunn's classroom raised $641

This project is fully funded

I teach 2nd grade in a low-income community in Brooklyn. Despite some really dire circumstances, my students come to school every day wanting to learn. Their desire learn and the wonderful and exciting questions that they generate keep me excited to be going to work every day.

The 2nd grade curriculum revolves around a study of our community, and the boroughs of New York City both today, and long ago. This is an area where my students really struggle. They know that they live in Brooklyn, but they have very little concept of New York City as a whole. In order to teach my students about both the history and general location of New York, I need books. I need books about every borough. I need books about famous buildings. And I need books about many of the wonderful historic events that took place here.

You can help bring these books to my classroom. These books will provide my students with the necessary background knowledge to learn about New York and to really appreciate the amazing city in which they live. These books will also provide my students the opportunity to do their own research about things in New York and to work together in groups. Literacy is part of everything that we do in the classroom.

These books will really support the great work that my students are already doing. They don't have a lot of background of knowledge about the city in which they live and having access to these books in our classroom will not only make our study of New York City more palatable to them, but will also enable them to get the most out of the city itself and to really appreciate the best place on earth!
