Help me give my students more choices in books for small group reading instruction, which will teach them to open their minds and learn about new cultures.

My Students

Students in my class are creative and love to read. My fifth grade class has a wide range of reading abilities and interests. My class is very diverse and they come from different areas. I have many students that live in the suburb, while the rest of them live in the country where they work hard to help on their family farm.

My students are enthusiastic, curious, and thirst for new knowledge.

They are constantly coming to me to tell me something new they learned, or ask me questions. Our classroom is a community where all are welcome and encouraged to work hard.

My Project

This will provide opportunities for students to read on their level. It will enhance their vocabulary, accuracy and comprehension skills. Students will participate in small group discussions about the books which will further enhance their oral language skills.

These new books will open a doorway to new cultures and experiences.

Students will discuss with their classmates the different cultures and how they can apply the lessons learned to their own lives. Students will more likely to be engaged when relating the experiences of the characters to their own lives. They will become deeper thinkers and look at the world through new lenses.
