Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students care deeply about the world they are growing up in. We visit our school garden to remind ourselves of our deep connection to nature. The garden is a tangible symbol of our interconnectedness, and these books will deepen our understanding of how we can take action toward climate resilience.

From Indigenous and scientific wisdom in Robin Wall Kimmerer's bestselling "Braiding Sweetgrass," to climate fiction like "The Overstory" and "Migrations" to a vital collection of hopeful, actionable essays in "Not Too Late," these books will help students grapple with the realities of our warming planet, deepen awareness, and understand how to take action.

One way students activate toward change is through writing, and "Excuse Me As I Kiss the Sky" is a tutorial on poetic forms by spoken word legend Rudy Francisco which offers inspiration to try unique structures--from Odes to Obits, Contrapuntals to Golden Shovels. By reading up on the latest calls to address the climate crisis, students will be able to write poetry and essays that help them celebrate the world they want to protect.
