My Students

I teach English Language Arts to about 150 7th grade students. We live in a rural community that is a fair distance from other communities. many of our students help on family farms and dairies. My students are great kids who know how to work hard. One of the consequences of online learning due to Covid has been a drop in our students’ reading levels. We are working on a variety of strategies to help them. The best strategy of all if providing good books for them.

My Project

When students can read and discuss a book with friends and classmates, it makes the experience more enriching. Having multiple copies of titles allows this to happen. I find that non-readers and below level readers don't know what books to choose to read. If I can get students interested in a book and start a conversation, the students usually appreciate the book and complete it. I have had students tell me that the class books we are already reading are the first books they have finished. I want them to finish more!
