Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are always excited about learning and always want to learn how things work and have so many great questions! My first graders love hands-on, dynamic tasks and activities that allow them to let their creative juices flow. Every day, my students are ready to attempt different challenges both individually and in small groups.
Our school is in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and is a high-poverty school with the children receiving one hundred percent free breakfast and lunch.
Every student in my classroom definitely loves discovering and learning new things even if the approach and setting where they like to learn best can differ completely. We find it important to encompass a range of learning approaches, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to guarantee that each student's needs are met wherever they are. My students are truly an incredible group and I am so lucky and thankful to have a great group of learners that are always excited and ready to learn!
My Project
My wonderful first grade students absolutely love reading new books and are always excited each time I share a new book with them. After we have read the new books, the books are added to our classroom library for them to read over and over. This project is for books that will offer more diverse, culturally responsive titles with characters who represent everyone.
Books are a terrific tool to teach love and acceptance and having books that show and celebrate our differences will give my students a clearer picture of the diverse world they live in.
I want my students to read books that reflect their own backgrounds and life experiences in order to strengthen their own understanding of their self. In addition, I want them to learn about others' experiences and cultures to develop empathy and understanding. These books will help my students see things from different perspectives and see what a wonderful, diverse world they are a part of.
These books will be enjoyed by my students for many years to come.
