Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are funny, exuberant, high-energy Spanish-speaking second graders. Most are from low-income, immigrant families. My students are mesmerized by good stories and are highly engaged when I read aloud to them in Spanish and English.
Despite serial disruptions to their education due to high teacher turn-over, my students are eager to learn and excited about growing as readers.
My students are hungry for high quality stories. Along with the effort they put into learning how to read, their attentive listening and joyful enthusiasm for discussing meaningful and beautiful books is inspiring.
My Project
I am requesting Spanish and English picture books that will inspire my students to reflect on who they are and to see themselves as agents of positive change in the world.
The texts that I have selected are beautiful and thoughtful picture books with a social/emotional component.
I have chosen Spanish language books such as Quizás Algo Hermoso by F. Isable Campoy, which tells the story of how art transformed a Latino neighborhood. I have chosen English language books such as Real Cowboys by Kate Hoefler, which depicts cowboys as gentle care takers.
I have also included picture books that teach self regulation and empathy in a kid-friendly and accessible way.
