Books to Dispel Prejudice and Build Community

Help me give my students an opportunity to expand their view of the world through reading novels like like The Hate U Give and The Sun is Also a Star, which are told by underrepresented voices in literature.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading books has been losing popularity among teens. YouTube, social media, video games and Netflix consume most of my 8th graders' free time. It doesn't help that many of the stories provided by textbook publishers are unrelatable to my ethnically diverse students.

Teens crave connection; "Thus to see oneself in the pages of a young adult book is to receive the reassurance that one is not alone after all," (Young Adult Library Services Association).

My classroom library needs books that offer diverse perspectives. I want to add books with culturally diverse protagonists, written by authors of color, so that my students can see themselves on the pages of the books they read. I also want to challenge them to learn about people culturally different than themselves.

My Project

Literature is used to expand students' points of view and thinking. In the twenty first century, we live in an increasingly diverse and global society. Students must be prepared to meaningfully engage with people from diverse backgrounds without prejudice in the workplace.

"If we expect students to take social responsibility, they must explore ideas, topics, and viewpoints that not only reinforce but challenge their own" (J.

Glasgow). Students will participate in literature circles using these books that present different versions of the American experience. This will be a starting point from which they will write a version of their own American experience.
