Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My second grade class is made of 22 amazing children. They range in diversity and ability. Some are autistic, and many receive special education services. We are a Title I school, and all of my students are from low-income households, so they all receive free breakfast and lunch every day. Though their backgrounds have offered them little advantage, my students love learning, and they work very hard each day.

With parents who struggle to provide their children with the most basic needs (food, shelter, clothing), things like kindness and compassion are rarely taught at home.

It is left to teachers and schools to instill a sense of empathy in our students which is why I'm requesting books that spotlight these characteristics in beautiful, engaging ways.

My Project

Now, more than ever, we need more kindness in the world. Unfortunately, my the focus of my students' families is on basic needs, leaving little room for providing much else.

Kindness is something my students must be taught at school.

That's why I'm requesting a wonderful collection of books that teach kindness, compassion, and empathy. They promote diversity, inclusion, tolerance, and acceptance. They illustrate the golden rule. These books will set the stage for a classroom of children who care about one another, who seek ways to help each other, and whose kindness will carry over from the classroom into their greater community.
