Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students will be first generation students when they go to college. My students need rigorous, exiting, and adventurous books to motivate them to go out and change the world. My classes are filled with hard-working, success driven, and energetic kiddos that want to make their parents proud! Each day feels successful in Ms. Padilla’s class, because they strive to go above and beyond — they have already committed to college graduation (in tenth grade). Although we have a very small school library that serves students from the 6th grade to 12th graders, I want my tenth graders to have access to all the books I believe can make their minds explore new areas they've never experienced. Please help and give my students the opportunity to escape reality... even if it is just for a couple of chapters!

My Project

Ninety percent of YES Prep students are first-generation college bound. Eighty percent of YES Prep students are economically disadvantaged. Ninety-five percent of YES Prep students are Hispanic or African American. Most students enter YES at least one grade level behind in reading. These may seem like dismal statistics. But... ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of YES graduating seniors are accepted into four-year colleges. YES stands for Youth Engaged in Service. Not only do my students have longer school hours, but they volunteer regularly in the community. Because of this unique supplement of volunteerism to our curriculum, not only do our students go off to college, but they come back to town after graduation and give back to the community. YES is transforming the face of education in our community, one child at a time, and we are proving that any child can learn. With this project, students will be able to explore their interests through the books this project will fun, which will then lead them to motivation to succeed in college.
