My Students
For each student in our high school, there is a book they love, though many of our students do not yet know or believe that. Our mission is to change this, to create motivated, engaged individuals who see themselves as readers, and who see reading as a way to better understand themselves and the world around them.
The right book in the hands of a reluctant reader can change one life, one family, one community.
Our district is richly diverse, and many of our students have had limited opportunities outside of school to fall in love with reading. We are on a mission to spark a genuine motivation for reading in each student.
As we move toward incorporating more and more independent reading choices both in and out of school, more and more students have already begun taking books home, or asking for books similar to ones they have enjoyed. They are beginning to understand that reading is about more than processing words and answering questions. They are beginning to see themselves in books.
My Project
Students will have the opportunity to choose a book to read that they are interested in, something they can see themselves in. Good books motivate readers and non-readers alike, and we need motivated readers now more than ever.
Excitement has begun to build around our summer reading program thanks to these two book titles!
Students will be able to borrow these books from our literacy center, or teachers may borrow multiple copies to run literature circles in English 1 classes. This will also give students who did not get a chance to read one of these books over the summer the opportunity to do so before the summer reading symposium.
