My Project

I am a black teacher that teaches in an urban school within a low income community. My school doesn’t have the funding to provide a school library. As a teacher, I understand the importance of providing students with the opportunity to read. Since my students are predominantly black, I would love the help of building my students a library that is more diverse in their culture. More times than not, I am reading books that does not represent my students ethnicity, gender, culture, and traditions which makes it hard for my students to associate with the messages given and characters portrayed in the book.

I want my students to look in a book and say, “Hey he or she looks like me, and I want to be just like that character when I grow up!” There is so much more that my students can accomplish other than sports.

It is not enough that I say it, but if they can see it in pictures, read in words, then they can dream the endless possibilities of their future successes. By offering my students a culturally diverse classroom library, I am not only building literacy skills, but bright futures for my students.
