Many of my students come to me from low-income families. Single parents are raising most of our students. Ten percent of my students live with a grandparent or a foster parent due to family issues. Most of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Throughout the year, we are made aware of our homeless students. These students need extra care and attention.
I try to create as positive of a learning environment as I possibly can because they deserve it.
My students face so many challenges. Please help me give them materials that they'll actually enjoy.
My Project
I teach in a low income district where 83% of my students are on free or reduced lunch. Many of my students have never had a parent take them to the library. In addition because of a lack of funding our school no longer has a library. Many of my students are minorities, and a lot of the books that I have are not as appealing to them. I believe these books will be very exciting for my minority students to read.
We use the Accelerated Reader program at my school and many of our minority students are not taking advantage of this program and the incentives that go along with it.
If we can get them interested in these books, they will get the opportunity to enjoy the sweet rewards that go along with reaching their goal.
We are requesting books. The Dork Diaries and Babysitter Club books appeal to many of my lower female readers. Many of the books feature minorities in the lead. The Who Is books are geared to my lower level readers because they have 5th grade content but they are on a lower reading level. The other books come highly requested, and I believe they will get my boys to enjoy reading. The graphic novels help many of my struggling readers enjoy the stories and understand what they are reading better. The more they enjoy to read, the more they will read and the better they will get at it.
