My Students

Biographies allow children to get a glimpse into someone else's life and can be a wonderful teaching tool. However, many biographies are written at a higher level than my second grade students can independently read. Having age-appropriate biographies on CD would greatly benefit my students!

My students are a wonderful bunch of at-risk second graders who attend a rural school in Illinois.

Our state is behind in funding by 1.5 million dollars and our school can no longer spend the money to buy the materials our children so desperately need. Many of these children come from homes where books, especially "on-level" non-fiction books, are scarce.

My Project

In second grade, much of our social studies curriculum comes from our literature. However, our school's selection of age-appropriate biographies is very limited. These books would give ALL students the chance to learn about many famous Americans that have had such a huge impact on our history. All students should be able to read books about great men and women, such as Abraham Lincoln and Rosa Parks.Having audio CDs to accompany these books will take the frustration out of reading and will open the door to learning for everyone!

Biographies are a hidden gem in the library that many children aren't able to enjoy because of the level of difficulty.

Receiving age-appropriate books with audio CDs will help all my students experience the excitement of biographies. Please help my students be able to experience history from the viewpoint of the famous men and women who lived during that time. Together we can open the doors to the past and maybe inspire the next Abraham Lincoln or Harriet Tubman!
