Books Students Want; It Makes a Difference!

Help me give my students books they want: Young Reader's Choice Award Books and fun Graphic Novels! Students chose these titles to add to the library so they, and their friends, can read books they will love.

My Project

All of the requested books are titles that our middle schoolers - not staff- chose. That is important because self-selected reading is twice as powerful as teacher-selected reading in developing motivation and comprehension. Students who have the opportunity to choose what they read, read more, understand more, and are more likely to continue to read for pleasure throughout their life. Children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better in school than their peers who rarely read.

One great way to support children’s reading is by providing books they choose.

Our students are thrilled to have their voices heard and their book choices respected. In a student survey, 100% of respondents said they want the library to reflect their book choices. They want to come to the library, check out self-selected books, and read them.

These books will be read. All 7th graders, year after year, will be exposed to these books and more during the quarterly "Speed Dating with a Book" program. Seven titles are part of the Pacific Northwest Library Association's annual contest: Young Reader's Choice Award. Thirteen titles on the list are fun, light-hearted graphic novels. We expose students to all genres of books during the "speed dating" With this program, students often find books they love and would otherwise never have known about. The result is more students self-selecting books to read for pleasure. All of the titles on this list are rated 4.5 stars and above, and some are up for student awards.
