Books Open Up New Worlds of Ideas and Possibilities!
Help me give my students the gift of rich literature in their native language, and an introduction to the powerful work of Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Hello! I am a new teacher starting from scratch this school year. I serve 9th grade SLIFE (students with limited or interrupted formal education) in inner city Trenton, New Jersey. I was given a small budget for supplies: pencils, pens, an electric pencil sharpener, composition notebooks, and dry erase markers. This was as far as my allotted $200 budget could stretch. This is why my priority request through DonorsChoose is for BOOKS - three class sets of rich literature in my students' native tongue (Spanish), as well as a few other books to start my classroom library. It is vitally important to draw upon my students' "funds of knowledge" - their cultural background and personal experiences - to draw them into literature in a way that will allow me to nurture their literacy skills and independent thinking. I thank you in advance for your support!
