My students need 20 copies of "Good Time Girls Of the Alaska- Yukon Gold Rush" -Lael Morgan, and 20 copies of "Aleutian Sparrow" -Karen Hesse for Alaska History classes.

Yupik Alaskan Natives are in need of relevant educational literature. I teach Alaska History in a rural coastal village with no text books. These 9-12th graders are very interested in the history of their state, but lack resources. Along with the socioeconomic problems rural people face, and not having funds for books, they severely lack reading skills. I hope to alleviate both issues with the acquisition of these books.

In the last four years teaching in rural Alaska, the two most interesting topics, according to my students in Alaska History, were the Aleut Evacuation & Boomtown eras. These to books will allow me to expand and reinforce these time periods and draw on student interest to encourage more reading in the village.

These two books have become classics in Alaskan History. They are in depth and entertaining stories of little known events and characters in history. One focuses on the role of women in Alaska's early days and the other on treatment of Native Alaskans during the 1940's. Both are very relevant to class and community.

With your help, I think I can spark interest in reading with two groups sorely in need of encouragement: Native Alaskans & young women. By teaching young women that both sexes played vital roles in the shaping of Alaska's History I will empower them and remove the age old barrier that female students have too long felt in History courses. By teaching Native students that this US government has flaws and makes mistakes, yet does its best to repair such situations, I will attempt to build civic responsibility & help Natives become part of this unique culture we call America.
