Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This proposal is designed for student reading both at home and at school. The requested take-home reading backpacks are equipped to engage students in reading with their family members. The backpacks will include a book, a reading journal, comprehension activities, realia (real items to build vocabulary), and reward stickers. I am requesting 16 packs altogether: 8 Fiction and 8 Non-Fiction. While all students will be encouraged to check out a reading backpack, my non-readers will benefit the most. My class is composed of students at varied reading levels, English Language Learners, and students with special needs. A reading interest survey taken by my students shows that books are not readily available at home. I would like to provide opportunities for our families to have quality shared reading time. The backpacks also come with materials that help the reader understand key concepts of the story. I know my students will also use these materials during our reading workshop time in class. Our reading time is structured to encourage students to choose materials that both interest them and that are at their reading level. I don't doubt that the backpacks will soon be a big hit with readers who don't usually settle down to a chapter book. In addition, I have included some great colorful pillows for our class library. Often students will sit on the floor to read in a small group. The pillows will make it more fun and comfortable for students to come together and read, and this will allow them to focus more on their reading, instead of moving around constantly to try and get comfortable. The last great item I am requesting here is the reading fluency Reader's Theater Set. I chose this because I want to see students practice reading with feeling. The box contains 32 scripts (4 copies for each of 8 short plays) that allow students to build fluency and develop a sense of pacing, intonation, expression and more. The set is accessible to a wide range of reading abilities and can be done in a small group during reading workshop. Then students cab read it for the class. Reading fluently and with expression allows the reader to better comprehend the material. My goal is to help students cross the reading barrier to become active, engaged, and strong readers.
