Books on Kindness and Empowerment Encourage Kind and Powerful Kids
My students need more books about African Americans who have made significant contributions to history, and fiction books such as the Jaden Toussaint series with lovable and exciting characters of color who represent them.
A typical day in our school library consists of classes coming in to hear a story read aloud and then to check out books. During lunch, groups of students choose to spend their free time in the library playing cooperative games, drawing, and making crafts.
The students at my elementary school are primarily African American and live in the neighborhood.
More and more of our students are reading at grade level, but most of our students do not have many toys and games at home. We are a small community school in a neighborhood with few amenities like grocery stores.
Our students are curious and excited about the world, love to read, and they are eager to try new activities that they don't get to do at home or in their community! The school library is a place where students nurture their own love of learning. It is a joyful place where all students feel welcome. This is so important in order to encourage our youth to fall in love with reading, find their personal talents and interests, explore their imagination, take creative risks, and become life-long learners.
My Project
The books I have chosen for this order will refresh our school library. The selection consists of a mixture of popular literature of high interest, books about African American figures who have made significant contributions to history but have not been widely written about, fiction featuring African American main characters, or books for read-alouds about kindness for our Kind Kids Club.
My students reading scores are exceeding our goals, and our students need a wide variety of literature to excite them and sustain their interest in reading.
These books will go a long way to help us achieve this goal!
