I am a Teacher Librarian in a small inner city public elementary school with a predominantly African American population. The neighborhood where my school resides has few amenities like grocery stores and book stores. In a neighborhood with a high rate of crime and poverty, 99% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch! The school library is a joyful place where students can check out books to read at home. I want my students to have access to the best children's books available! It is well known that books can offer students a window to the world. A vibrant school library can provide just that!
