I have 22 fifth-grade students who are attending the first STEAM magnet school in our county. They are a diverse group of learners that come from all over Pasco County.
A day in my classroom starts with students scheduling their day by choosing what, when, and how they would like to complete their learning.
My students are provided with voice and choice in their learning and are required to take individual responsibility for their learning. I encourage students to fail forward, in order to learn from their experiences and persevere when faced with challenges. They are encouraged to learn from one another through collaboration and by using their critical thinking skills to solve real-world problems.
My Project
My students are creative, compassionate, and critical thinkers. They need the opportunity to read books that are as diverse as the world around them.
They would like to be able to find literature in our library that they can mirror themselves in, connect with their community, and the world around them.
As an elementary school teacher, I have the opportunity to provide them with significant learning experiences that open doors for them, teach them to advocate for themselves and their community, and expose them to a variety of cultures and traditions from around the world.
My hope is for my students to build knowledge of the world around them as well as to add fun to their lives. These books encourage reading about important people in the world and engage the students in learning about cultures besides their own.
