I teach 9th and 11th grade at a high poverty school in Delaware. Many of my students have experienced little success in school and in response have developed a myriad of strategies for avoiding work. Reaching them poses a significant challenge under the best of circumstances, let alone during these trying time. Most of them want to do well in school, but do not want to risk further academic failure or embarrassment. Add to this students with special needs, English language learners, and those who are simply apathetic toward school and you have a recipe for widespread failure.
However, despite all of the obstacles in their way, my students know school has something to offer them and desperately want to find what it is.
My job is to facilitate my students' journey from struggling, reluctant learners to life long lovers of education.
My Project
This year in all English classes across our school students are allowed to read books they pick, regardless of level or topic, for at least 20 minutes every day. As a result, more students are asking me for specific books, whether by title, author, or genre than ever before. This is concrete evidence that the program is working and I need your help to ensure its continued success.
My students want to read; unfortunately, the majority of the books they have been forced to read are boring, dull, or outdated.
The solution to this problem is easy - let them read books they want to read. I need your help providing them with books they have asked for.
I am asking for 25 books encompassing a wide variety of levels, topics, and genres to help meet this need. Whether they are books kids specifically asked for (the Michael Vey books, Prairie Fire) or genres (lots of YA mysteries - The Soft Place to Land, A Silence of Bones) and topics (Dear Evan Hansen, All Out, Cinderella is Dead) these are books they will read, enjoy, and learn from because they WANT to read them.
