My kindergarten team works tirelessly to meet the needs of the 100 plus students we interact with, teach and care for every day in our classrooms. Our students are becoming more and more diverse and we are seeking ways to help our classrooms and curriculum reflect that change.
"In kindergarten, you can learn how to be a citizen of the world." Jill Lepore.
We are usually the first structured introduction to the joys of reading and having literature that reflects the students in our classrooms would be life-changing. When a student sees themselves or is able to gain empathy and understanding for others through books it can be magical. Creating compassion and passion for the people in our community, and our world, is powerful.
My Project
All students deserve to see themselves in books. Sharing stories about people from different backgrounds, who are neurodiverse, or who have different needs can open children's minds up to lives and truths that they may not have known existed. Read aloud is the time of day when my classroom is able to relax together and journey to new places as a family. The texts I am hoping to add to our classroom will help us have discussions and share ideas about our similarities and differences. Reading "Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood" will help students see how art can bring a community together. "One Green Apple" can show students the struggles and successes lived by immigrants.
Book characters can become role models for children.
Seeing themselves or their families in a story can make a positive impact on not only that child, but those around him or her. By discussing problems in the books, putting ourselves in the character's shoes, and relating to what the characters are going through we can teach empathy, self-awareness, and confidence and raise self-esteem.
I want my students to know that no matter who they are, where they come from, or what they look like their dreams are not only important but achievable. The books included in this project will help me do that.
