Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all newcomers to this wonderful country. 70% speak Spanish, and 30% speak Mayan languages like Mam and Poqomchi. They are eager to perfect their English and they soak up vocabulary and grammar like sponges.
What a gift it is to be able to contribute to the education of these newcomer students.
Having a classroom filled with pictures, books, and fun supplies eases their transition to the American School System. Our newcomer students are in three primary groups here. One group is 2nd and 3rd graders, one group is 4-6th graders, and the final group is the more advanced second-year students of multiple grade levels. We were the first newcomer class in our district of 30,000 students and are delighted that this much-needed program has begun expanding during the last three years. But we need you to ensure it's a continued success.
My Project
All students are motivated by AR (Accelerated Reader) tests. Maybe you remember them from when you or your children were in school. Kids read a book and take a quick comprehension test. They get immediate feedback and accumulate points in exchange for classroom prizes. They love it. However my Newcomer students who are recent arrivals from other countries cannot participate in this. They are eager to participate, however we need books in their native language.
Will you provide books in Spanish so my Newcomers could participate in our AR program?
This gives them a chance to feel like part of their classroom communities and also allows them to continue reading at their level for continued developmental growth. They will be able to earn AR points along with their classmates. Thank you so much for your support.
