This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in an inner city neighborhood charter school in Oklahoma. We serve the kids in a high crime and high poverty neighborhood. Over 90% of our kids receive free or reduced price lunch. Life is not easy for many of our students.
My students are active learners who are growing in their love of reading every day by exploring new titles that go with our weekly themes.
Our school goes above and beyond to meet the needs of each child. Our resources are sometimes very limited, but I try to make the classroom a safe and comfortable environment where learning is celebrated each day.
My Project
My kindergarten class needs books that correlate with our literacy curriculum. Instead of scrounging around and searching the school and city for needed titles each week, it would be delightful if we had the books in our class library within an arm's reach. The students can then review books during center time while learning new concepts from the next books.
Student learning will be enhanced and reinforced with easy access to books that coordinate with our literacy curriculum.
Kindergarten students love to read the same title over and over which is great for strengthening their memory and recall of prior skills learned.
