This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We begin each day and each class period with independent reading, students reading about an hour each week in school. A lot of students are currently reading far below grade level, and by the end of the year, we want to be at or above grade level. These books will help close the gaps for our children.
Our high school is a medical arts themed high school where students can get certified in a medical pathway by the time they graduate from high school and are on a college track.
However, because many of our students are reading below grade level, they will have greater hurtles to overcome once they leave us. Our goal is to close that gap by getting books into our students hands that they can really love.
My Project
Students will have the opportunity to read these books everyday. They will have book projects to complete and the opportunity to talk about and share their love for their books. We are working especially hard to get high interest books into our classrooms so that we can close the gap for our students in way that they enjoy. The best reading hours are when students forget that they "hate reading" because they have found books they love.
Students at our school have a strong desire to go to college, but thye know the road will not be easy if they are not reading on grade level.
No matter what they choose to do after high school, we want them to read and be ready. Your donation will get a book into a child's hand and they might find that they have fallen in love with reading.
