Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from very diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Most are second language learners from impoverished homes. They all love coming to my schools media center. Here, they are free to chose a story that speaks to them. I’m a firm believer in providing current, enjoyable and relevant materials for these students.
The large K-8 school I teach in is in a transitional stage.
We have not had funding to purchase material in the five years that I have been here. Traditionally the library media specialist had done fundraising through book fairs for new materials. However this year our staff was cut in half. The remaining staff carries a full teacher schedule of 30 classes a week. I have been unable to physically or emotionally run a book fair due to some personal health struggles and the lack of available volunteers to staff a book fair.
Ultimately the students suffer by not having fun, new materials that speak to them. I would like to place an order for new materials to put in the hands of these children who have no other opportunity to go to a library.
My Project
Most of my students come from single parent or two parent work around the clock homes. Taking their child to a library is not always feasible. Providing my students with current, high quality books in school supports early language development. Literacy skills are essential for student all around success. Helping me provide my students will new books to read is a personal and philosophical goal of mine.
With the help of funds, I will be able to purchase this year’s Caldecott & Newbery Winners.
Additionally I will look for STEM inspired texts and high interest, low level readers both fiction and nonfiction.
