Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are predominately Latino and African American and hail from North Richmond. My class has a vision for their success and is invested in their SMART goals to achieve their ambitions. In my classroom sit future doctors, lawyers, and educators, eager to learn and create knowledge for their lifelong success. Together the Justice League is developing the literacy skills they need to harness their voice and a critical consciousness.

Their markers of identity offer them a unique perspective and invaluable cultural capital that they may leverage to achieve their dreams.

I empower my students by engaging them in discourse around their own identity and their role in perpetuating systems of inequalities or offering better frameworks centered on the intersectionality of identity.

My Project

The Justice League has learned to read books like they are gold. These resources will support the research phase of our next reading and writing unit. These books are will support classes' inquiry of systems of inequalities, civil rights movements, and empowering leaders that pursued justice. Students will use the knowledge that they created to write All About Activism books.

Students will overcome barriers in their reading and writing so that they may access complex text and create complex text that will help others overcome barriers that stand in the way of justice.

"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
