My Project
Books can be a positive tool for students with hearing loss by supporting learning in a few ways: building auditory skills, social and emotional learning, as well as self-esteem and identity. Building auditory skills with amplification: hearing aids, cochlear implants or a BAHA, which books can provide engaging auditory experiences. Descriptive passages allow students to practice listening. Social and emotional learning focuses on stories that are reflective of students can support students with hearing loss navigate social situations, understand emotions, and develop empathy by relating to characters. Additionally, self-esteem and identity, seeing characters with hearing loss reflected in books can be empowering for students. They can build confidence and a positive self-image.
My project goals for using books and a journal with students with hearing loss: support literacy development, which creates a learning environment rich in engaging books cater to the specific needs of students with hearing loss, ensuring they can access and enjoy reading materials.
This will promote inclusion, by including books that feature characters with hearing loss or address deafness can create a more inclusive learning environment where all of my students feel valued and represented.
My students with a hearing loss are special because they bring a unique perspective and set of skills to the learning environment. They can have an increase in visual acuity because they often develop strong visual attention skills to compensate for hearing challenges. This can be an asset in learning environments that heavily rely on visual cues. They are resilient and determined because they have to overcome communication barriers, which can foster resilience and a strong work ethic. Lastly, by incorporating books and a journal that caters to their learning needs and celebrate their strengths, I can create a more inclusive and engaging learning experience for students with hearing loss.
