Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I've noticed a concerning pattern, and one that is backed by research, in my middle school social studies/ELA classroom; boys are far more reluctant to read than girls. These negative patterns have dangerous outcomes, as “more girls than boys achieve minimum proficiency in reading and the gap increases with age” (UNESCO, 2022). When boys in my class do read, I have noticed a particular interest in dystopian, war-related, and graphic novels. This is an area in which my classroom library is currently weak.

Several recent studies have identified reading fiction as strongly correlated with higher levels of emotional intelligence, including empathy, understanding of others, and deep thinking.

As a middle school teacher, I am acutely aware of the influence my classroom has on my students. With your help, I hope to bring more fiction which appeals to all my students, with a particular thought toward those most reluctant readers.
