This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"All I know, I learned in Kindergarten." This is a common phrase said by many adults. Think back to your Kindergarten classroom and all the things you learned and experienced with your fellow novice classmates. New worlds were opened to you in the books your Kindergarten teacher read aloud to you on your classroom carpet! Our Kindergarteners love to sit together on our carpet and hear books being read aloud as we explore the new world of reading together.
Our Kindergarten students have a vivacious desire for learning and we strive each day to guide them in achieving excellence through arts based learning.
We are a Title 1 Fine Arts Magnet school that services an inner city community. My Kindergarteners have such a well rounded education as they learn Literacy, Math, Social Studies and Science while learning Dance, Art, Drama and Music alongside.
My Project
My Kindergarteners each have a reading level based on where they are in their reading ability which changes as they grow as readers. Each week they pick out new books from our classroom library on their reading level to read during their independent reading time and during their buddy reading time. Reading these books helps to reinforces the sight words taught during our whole group and small group time, as well as all the reading strategies we're working on.
We only have so many leveled reading books for the students to pick from and it would greatly broaden my student's reading experience and interest to add more leveled readers to our classroom.
I have picked out fiction leveled readers as well as nonfiction readers to find books that each child will be interested in as they grow in their desire to read!
