Welcome to our English Language Arts classroom in Gwinn, Michigan. Our high school is tucked in the pines in the beautiful and remote Upper Peninsula.
My students are quirky, fun, and high energy.
I teach 10th through 12th graders whose interests range from playing sports to participating in drama camp to showing farm animals at the county fair. I love to nurture a passion for reading and writing and to help students develop their voices. These teenagers have a lot to say to the world!
Each month, I try to add books to my classroom library based on student requests. I can hardly keep up with their reading habits, but that's a good problem to have! Recently, a sophomore boy asked for more football books, so I am requesting this Felton Reinstein trilogy by Geoff Herbach. The first book, Stupid Fast, is described as realistic, moving, and hilarious.
I am also requesting two DVDs to show with whole-class novels.
Zootopia will be compared with Animal Farm by my English 12 students, and my Honors students will watch Angela's Ashes to go along with the memoir they are reading by Frank McCourt.
Lastly, I am building up my stock of writers' notebooks and page markers to give to students in mid-January when the new semester starts. They keep all their notes, including journal entries, grammar corrections, literature terms, vocabulary words, and reader's logs, organized in these handy composition books.
