My students need books that are on their reading level in order to meet the requirements of reading independently for thirty minutes a day. They need individual titles and several collections, including Nate the Great and Henry and Mudge.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Unlike many of us the students I serve in New Orleans have almost no access to books. Many of them have never seen a book outside of school. They need these books.
The school my students attend has been historically the lowest performing school in the state of Louisiana.
We are committed to turning this school around. The students at this school struggle in a profound way with what most would consider simple. My students have a really difficult time learning to read. Reading becomes even more difficult when you do not have books on your level to read. Imagine picking up a Shakespeare play as a 5th grader, that is how my students feel every day since they do not have books to read on their level.
My Project
Almost all of my students are at least 2 years behind in reading. In order to set them up for success we need to make at least 1.5 years of reading growth. These books will help us start making the growth we need to. These books will give my students something to read every day that is on their level. My students need these books.
Any donations can help put one more book in one more students hands.
Kids are losing the idea of what it means to read every day. In order to fight back and keep our children moving in the right direction I humbly ask you to donate to our project and put one more book in a students hand that really needs it.
